St Albans City & District Council manage in the region of 6,000 properties in St Albans city centre and surrounding Hertfordshire villages. Watret has had a long standing relationship with the client who required a contractor to upgrade a selection of solar thermal systems within their housing stock.
The client was having continuous issues with the thermal side of the system not working correctly whereby residents where not obtaining savings on their hot water. The client found a numerous manufacturer installation with some parties no longer trading or to attend within the warranty period.
Watret was asked to complete an overhaul of the system design with full recommendations. From investigation it was noticed the solar panels no longer working efficiently and had become cloudy with leaks appearing in the majority of the 16 installations.
On the completion of 2x pilot properties further design issues were found with the drain back system presently installed not providing enough head for the new panels and pumping station that with the need for individually designed hot water cylinders to fit inside the small airing cupboards.
Watret approached the client with a design of new solar panels, unvented cylinders, pressurised system and upgrade of control system. This is with a project time frame of 8 weeks and a clear budget on the works at each individual property. Watret standardised all items for a one manufacturer solution.
